Common Kia engine symptoms

An engine symptom does not automatically mean the complete engine must be replaced. Proper diagnosis should be performed before purchasing a replacement assembly.

Knocking or tapping

Internal noise may be related to oil pressure, bearing wear, valvetrain components, timing components, combustion or an external accessory. Stop operating the vehicle when severe knocking or an oil-pressure warning is present.

Oil consumption

Oil loss can result from external leaks, piston-ring wear, valve-seal problems, turbocharger issues or crankcase-ventilation problems. Check the oil level regularly and document the rate of consumption.

Overheating

Overheating may damage the cylinder head, head gasket, pistons and bearings. The cooling system, water pump, thermostat, radiator, fans and combustion gases should be checked.

Misfires and low compression

Misfires can be caused by ignition, fuel delivery, wiring, vacuum leaks, valve problems or internal compression loss. Compression and leak-down testing can help locate an internal problem.

Replacement decision

Compare the cost of diagnosis and repair with the cost of a replacement engine, required labor, fluids, seals, programming and related components.
